A&S Trucking, the original operating company, was officially founded in 1982 by the Schmidt family, whose history in the industry dates back to the turn of the 20th century. The Schmidt family still has members involved in the day-to-day operations of the business.
Serv U Inc.
A&S Services Group, LLC announced that it has acquired substantially all of the assets of Serv U Inc. Additionally, the company signed Hale Transport to an exclusive Agency Agreement.
Combining A&S Services’ existing intermodal resources with those from the Serv U acquisition and Hale Transport creates a pool of approximately 60 company and independent power units operating from a secure container freight station and cross-dock warehouse in close proximity to the Port of Baltimore. The high functioning terminal purchased as part of the acquisition gives the company a high security, six-acre yard with a 30-dock door cross-dock facility for transloading of freight and temporary warehouse storage capability.
The shipping capacities of Hale Transport and Serv U Inc. combined with A&S Services’ vast inland transportation capabilities make A&S Services the premiere transportation partner for all major companies in the Mid-Atlantic Region.
A&S acquired the assets of Kinard Trucking in 2012. By acquiring Kinard, A&S added valuable resources and services, as well as the wonderful reputation of service and customer satisfaction that Kinard was known for, to the A&S organization. At the time of acquisition Kinard maintained and operated a fleet of 200 power units, 1100 late model high-cube air-ride vans with satellite communications, as well as a full-service 160,000-square-foot public warehouse and distribution center offering six rail docks and twenty dock doors. Their operations featured roll paper, and slip-sheet and box-clamp-handling equipment in addition to a computerized inventory control system and EDI, paperless invoicing, customized performance reports and more. Den-El Transfer originated in 1987 with the purchase of a small LTL firm, Charles F. Petty & Sons, which had been in the trucking business since the 1940’s. Den-El held one of the first ICC registered numbers. The company grew from a one-truck operation up to as many as 22 tractors and a staff of 27. Den-El also diversified from LTL into a balance of port and domestic TL rail work for a wide variety of customers within a 150-mile radius of Baltimore, MD.
A&S purchased Den-El Transfer in June 2011, integrated their operations within the A&S organization, and established the intermodal transportation business at A&S.
The Diamond Group
The Diamond Group began in 1936, when The Blue Diamond Company was formed by Harry and Kenneth Zechman. In 2000,
The Diamond Group added Beverage Transportation, Inc. (Beverage), to its group of carriers. Beverage was formed in 1956, and, as the name implies, was focused on the transportation of malt and brewed beverages.
Beverage became the flagship company for The Diamond Group, helping the company to sustain its heritage. In 2005, the corporation was purchased by members of its management team; the new owners had over 90 years’ combined experience with The Diamond Group. Headquartered in Thomasville, Pennsylvania, the combined trucking companies operated 125 drivers on the East Coast of the United States.
Recognizing the value of its employees and its reputation among its customers, A&S Services Group entered into an asset purchase agreement with The Diamond Group in January 2010. This allowed many of the company’s employees, management staff, and equipment to continue to service Diamond Group customers as part of A&S Services Group.
